The Three Mistakes of my life!

1) I read his first book and thought it made sense and was a terrific first attempt.Even though,he literally translated Hindi to english.
2) I read the second, thinking he might have improved.I was clearly mistaken.
3)I was Ms.Scrooge McDuck (my childhood hero and long-time crush) to have picked up the third over a Rs 350/- novel which i knew i could get for the aforementioned book's price in the pirated market while on a train from Delhi to Nagpur.

The cup half full;
1)A mail last night from appa said the book made for a fantastic manure to his garden. And,he was overwhelmed on knowing the price. He has ordered for a few more.

P.S:- 1)I wish people would stop using the fairer sex as cat's paw in their plots.
2)An equally fair amount of us believe that life is not all about smoking it up,drinking it up or sex'ing it up.Are we really too normal to be protagonist's in a book?

A friend of mine once remarked -
the three mistakes of Chetan Bhagat's life --

Writing first book.
Writing second book
Writing third book. !!

Ha Ha. Either ways, he is making money and is the winner :)

Yeah. The guy has managed to generate a cult following despite his redundant and rather trite sense of writing. He has found the right combination of content that people (read wannabes) seem to empathize with.

I for one couldn't go beyond reading parts of the first book which in itself was a gross misrepresentation of IIT life.

As Rowan Atkinson puts it in Black Adder, the book is "soft, strong and thoroughly absorbent"- all the qualities worthy of a good toilet paper. :)

Beyond all this, one must not forget how he has changed the literary scene. Earlier, people who wouldn't touch a book are flaunting their literary ride on reading his books. He is the "roti, kapda, makan" of the aam - non literature reading entities in this country. It reminds them of those ddlj, dil to pagal hai kind of an era with a modern twist, perhaps.

All this said and done, have you noticed him in these pretentious- shows of barkha and others? What a put-off! You would not know he was a writer if they wouldn't paste his name all over the screen.

Agreed !! He has managed to strike a cord with the plebian romantics. But its three too many of the same genre. Maybe his hinglish way of writing with the added garam masala has won him the wider audience, but he could/should add more of intellectual content and definitely be more realistic. Then again its the opinion of a select few and he can choose to write whatever the heck he wants as long as it pays(him!).

Just that it slurs the image of an average iitgrad/call centre employee/whomsoever. I have had to explain to people that not all of us smoke/booze/dope.

Saw the one interview of his on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uWPZjVksmDI . All the hoopla by the media and his self-conceited answers make me nauseous. It seems common now with most "celebrity" interviews. Cant blame him alone for that. You must have seen Barkha Dutt's interview of Rahul Gandhi post election results. She was THE definition of a suck up.

I guess my reply was a bit too strongly worded.

This is one of the many well written blogs and to reiterate your readers... rock on!!

(P.S: you have inspired me to start blogging. Lets see how that goes.)

No, Not at all too-strong-worded. For a second, i thought, i was reading myself :P :) Frankly, completely in sync with my view. Started strongly disliking barkha after the blogger (c kunte??) case and also how anti-hindu she is.

Thank you for the compliment and also very humbled. Could I have a link to your blog? Would love to read it. :)

Ah and also, looks like you are an IITian yourself. Seemed to have deeply taken it to heart, that fellows writing.
If it helps, quite recently, a friend said " yeh iit wale log hamesha vodka,pf aur smoke karte rehte hain na?" . Much to my shock quite honestly.
Worst part, she generalises it to all enginerring-govt colleges :P
She called it, " engineering is all about guitar and grass, isn't it?"
Quite funny how chetan has convinced these people into believing something so silly!

I started a blog at shubhamasthu.blogspot.com long time back now. Just had one post in it :|. Was planning to expound sanatana dharma within the limits of my knowledge of vedopanishads.
Hoping to revive that and start a couple of other blogs. Will surely ping you when I finish one.

And yeah im an IITM 2008 passout (BTech MTech dual degree Aerospace Engg), one of the many chamathu thachi mammam loving teetotallers.:) (now you know !)

P.S: Must read the articles of C Kunte. Had not heard of him before. Seems like it'd be an interesting read.

that was updated in 2006,last! :)

santhana dharma. Brilliant.Would love to read them. Quite interested init myself.

Haha. I think tachi mamum- being one or not is all a matter of priority. Differs with people. But generalisation is what is quite unfortunate.

C kunte had to remove the post. Google it, you might find it. His post was mentioned in The Hindu. I guess, that's what ticked our "queen" off.

Agreed. Though one would not like to be referred to as a thayir saadam guy/gal, it isnt totally his/her choice when it comes down to it. :).
