NAVRATRI was HERE!!

22

Navami h.52-45 , Uttarasadha Nakshatra h.54-38 , Atiganda Yoga h.02-08 , Balava Karana h.20-37

The last day of Navratri and yours truly has finally risen from her slumber.I wanted to post a lot of things for the last few days but too many journal, assignment deadlines coupled with quiz/sessionals/tests have prevented me against my wish to do so.
The season of coulours, dances, celebration, sweets, food was here. The celebration of
Shakti/Devi,the consort of Shiva/Vishnu in all her glory.The celebration of Womanhood.Nine days of pure,unadulterated festivity.Brilliantly colored rangolis,pulchutridonously
clad women, the bengali-pandals,the gujurati stick-dance and garbas and my Tamizh golus.

For the uninitiated, this is what the hindu festival of navratri is all about.

Goddess also known as shakti or devi is worshipped in three forms with nine names. One for each day.
Durga, the annihilator of everything evil and wicked is worshipped on the first three days.
Lakshmi, bestower of material wealth, money, power, fame on the next three days.
Finally Saraswati, the goddess of wisdom, education, knowledge is venerated on the third.

((The three together could be considered an equivalent of the powerpuff girls.))

On the ninth day all of us who normally claim to study hard throughout the year, give it a rest and let our brains and books cool. That is on Saraswati puja.
The next day ,on the eve of ayuthu puja we clean, bathe and dress all the intruments that make our living possible.Anything from a pen,scooter,AK-47,Bazooka,needle,zhadu is cleaned and given its share of manjal, kumkum.
Then,we have the Vijayadashami which is considered an auspicious day to start anything. Also,on this day we pay our
obeisance to our teachers or guru's.
On the final day we celebrate Dusshera. On this day an effigy of Ravana is burnt in most parts of northern india symbolising the victory of good over evil.

According to smartha tradition Devi is considered as one of the five supreme powers. An equivalent of wonder-woman of the smarthan justice league. She is the female aspect of divine sans whom the male power becomes null and void.Hence, this festival celebrates the female divinty and power.
Three cheers to WOMAN-POWER! :)

Some of my best memories are associated with this time of the year. The most obvious being the GOLU.
Few things i really missed owing to me not being at home were:
1)The cleaning and laying of the ziggurat like golu padi and the dolls, which i claimed to hate but secretely loved doing, amidst all of my mom's obfuscatory instructions.
2)Cloying amounts of protein overdose on all nine days from all of my mom's friends. And an even priceless discussion of it's palatability ranging from "thu, ennadi idhu"."blech, yevlov uppu/oil","besh besh, perfect".
3)Sitting through croaking mami's singing who gently reminded us,"ippo thondai seri illai, avlova nalla padu midiyadhu".While, me and my friends discussed

"I wonder what sen aunty and gumbal are doing.i wish i was a bong, cha!"

"don't worry, you can still marry one di"

4)Waiting for the list of people invited to pack-off home so we could run off to our dandiya night, just to watch our gujju sisters majestically frugging around the dance floor while we desperately tried to catch on or just watched gapingly.

5)Misti doi,moti choor,sweet sundal,rasgulla,milk kheer......(sigh)

6)And ,not to forget the hours spent getting dressed in pink, orange, kajal, bangles, huge ear-rings and everything else.

Festivities are not times you just pray to a deity for something material, for me it is a time i thank Her for the family, friends and everything else i am blessed with.It is not about kolu, dandia, dressing, sweets ,it is about the memories and the people with whom you enjoyed all the above.

Here,i take this opportunity to give my season greetings to all mami's,mama's,uncle, auntie's,friends, pati, tata's,fellow tams and blog readers.

Yah,better late than never!

And,here is a small surprise for you.Since,i could not be at home and be a part of everything i wrote above. Here,is a little something i could come up with. Before that a small description.

KOLU means a sovereign sitting in her royal durbar. As per belief, the concept of arranging these Navrathri dolls on the plank is to depict that Goddess Mahishasuramardini is sitting in her Kolu, prior to the slaying of the demon Mahishasura.

Thanks a ton to SHANKY for helping me out with this.Few errors but i was too lazy to do it again.

No.You are not getting sundal until you sing or dance or mimic or show any one of your talents.Whatever it is that you do well, just record it and send it to me and i will showcase your talent on my blog. Then, you will be sent a complimentary pack of sundal, vathalai pakku, kannadi, pottu, seepu, valai. :) positively!
And for guys, will take you to the next dandiya raas :) positively!
you are just a camera or recorder away!

HAPPY NAVRATRI,DUSSERA AND EVERYTHING ELSE!!!!

(By the time most of you read this, you would have already digested all the edible and non-edible thoughts/entities of the celebration. Not my fault,Education kills.)

AH.....Chooooo!!!

Three of us were sitting jobless when....

Me: "I have added this 'My follower' on my blog. You people go and become my followers."
Friend 1: "UM.....All that is ok.But what do we get??"
Me: "silence".pause (oh yeah!i can speak with my silent button on too!) "more silence."
F1: "Tell. What do we get in return?"
Me:"You get my blessings" (feeling very smart)
F1:"Even when we do not sneeze?" (with an obvious smirk)
Me:(lol look)

five minutes later.

I got up to leave.

Friend3(who was sitting there all along listening to the exchange of words very quietly but intently): HA HA HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA......(rolling on the floor)HA HA HA HA.

Me(was almost out when i came back running in):What happened?(With my eyes the size of tennis balls)

F3:"That was so funny"(all along stifling a laughter)...."even if i don't sneeze part".....ha ha ha ha ha ha.

I quietly but finally exited the room with a smile writ large on my face.

Talk about TubeLights!!

:):)

lemon and lime

In the hostel today, near the white tiled hole which i call the sauna this was the conversation between two girls waiting their turn at the wash basin to wash their cups and glasses. They were holding their respective Vim liquid soap bottles.

Girl1: Arey yaar!Kitna time lagate hain yeh log.Bai log hato hato.Jaldi.Mereko ED karna hai yaar.
Girl2:(all the while not paying attention to what G1 is saying) hm........
G1:Kya sadma pohonch gaya kya?
G2:hm.........
G1:(jerking G2 forward and backwards)
G2:huh?!? Tera vim yellow hai aur mera green.aise kaise??! (with the most confused look on the face of earth)
G3:Arey simple!!Mera pakka nimbu aur tera kachcha nimbu.

I found it incredibly funny and i had to put it somewhere.GH rocks!!

FACE THE MUSIC!

Lately, i have realised that a lot of my friends don't follow english songs. Not just for its lyrics but they hate the music ,the videos and sometimes they simply don't see the point.Fair enough!
Considering a good proportion of us know nothing about our regional music and dance forms.I do not know a reason as to why we must follow phoren stuff.I am not saying all of us who do shouldn't, but if we do listen to it ,it must be for our genuine liking and not because our circle of friends or any xyz follows it.
For instance, a lot of my friends religiously follow metal, the likes of metallica, nirvana and other blahs!I find it highly suicidal and i like to listen to music that leaves my anvil and stirrup in-tact once i am done reacting to the beats or music!Well, thank you, sir!
The point i am trying to make here is ,we always have this prejudice of considering everything english and filmy stuff cool and yo!Why do we do that? Most of us listen only and solely to english or hindi (dhin-chak) music.
Why do the majority of us feel bored in a classical concert? Why don't we try and feel a raag and try to find it's meaning just like we do for an english or a run-of-the-mill hindi song.
When will WE,the present generation discover the old masters in their musical embellishment.
Indian music is the miniature of life's harmony in sound. It has sacred undertones and uniquely synthesises the senses, psychology and spirituality.More than being a sensate pleasure it comforts, soothes and touches our soul.

I will try an illustrate a certain point i had made earlier about feeling the raag.

Below,is raag bhairav. It consists of all the seven notes and is usually sung in the wee hours of the morning. After listening to it continously for a couple of months you might be able to follow it.And,listen to it deeply with love and reverence and you will realise the expungence of negativities in our mind. When the music is playing we must allow it to love us by being willing to involve ourselves into the music.

HERE

P.S:I wrote this post for a reason.Very recently when i was telling a non-musical friend to get his beats right by using the tri-tal,i was made fun of by an on-looker!I usually do not care about fun poked at me but it irritates me no end to see unsolicited advice or humour regarding my religion or music thrown at me!A lot of us don't have an idea or neither try to get an idea about the theory of relativity or metaphysics or any scientific fundaes in general. But we don't have the balls(pardon me) to comment about it in public.DO WE?But why do we rant upon something we don't understand just because no-one is going to punch you on the nose?

Having said all this,i just want to clarify how i don't hate western or dhin-chak music.i absolutely adore pink floyd and ABBA.And i sing a lot of hindi songs in public or otherwise. :)

ONCE UPON A TIME, when i was tagged....

A certain Friend of mine verbally tagged me with this task.
I first thought it would be totally stupid to try out something like this, but eventually i did give in.
Here is the basic idea...

  • For the questions that have been asked, write down your honest answer (in a word or two).
  • Type your answers, one by one, on an exactly-as-written-on-paper basis, in the search bar of any image search engine that you prefer (Flickr / Google Image Search etc.).
  • You MUST use the same search engine for all the answers.
  • For every answer, only from the FIRST page of the search result, save exactly ONE image.
  • Once you have a list of images, each corresponding to one answer, compose a post in line with this post that you are reading right now.

SEARCH ENGINE: OB, flickr

DISCLAIMER: I HAVE written my answers in the same font size on the left hand side corner after every picture.but,do try to understand what the pictures says before you peep.It is so much fun!!trust me :))

barsaat ki raat....

No.No.This post has nothing to do with me feeling romantic and dancing in the rain with my hair let loose.
Lately,it has been raining and raining and ah yes before i forget ,raining. Now,on one such wet day as i came home dripping wet and all that i wanted to do was to sit in front of the T.V. with some hot "masala chai".
It did come true.partly.
Fifteen minutes later,i was holding a cup of hot steaming chai.ah!heaven.And i was sitting in front of the T.V. watching a certain lady named abi who was the sun tv's take on the epitome of womenhood. All tamizh mami's agree!I see her as a stupid, terrible tamizh speaking lady who walks around everywhere carrying a purse on her shoulders!I have been waiting for 2 years to see her put that purse down.I have given up.
I absent-mindedly picked up the 2H pencil lying on the table and an empty drawing sheet.
half an hour later this is what i came up with.
Yea,his vehicle looks a little wierd with split ends in its tail. After a little contemplation i realised how sub-conciously i had made the above photo.I had been praying to God to stop the rains and also to kill everyone at Sun TV in a tsunami which should happen only destroy the whereabouts of the channel. How would that happen??I don't know.

So,you see how incredible our human mind is??What we think comes out in some way or the other.
Genius or what???? :P :P :P

Race against Time

I got this mail from my brother yesterday.I cracked up after reading it just imagining my brother sitting with his usual "i-cannot-believe-this" expression. This reminds me of a similar incident just not-so-long back.

Hi Priya,
IF you ever happen to come across this movie named RACE. Race against madness, insanity...... ; that truckload of crap. please stay away from it and save from wasting three hours of your life and the countless hours regretting it.

with that cheerful not/admonition

Karthik anna

This experience of his reminds me of Fanaa. It had been two months since i had gone for a movie with ma.Just me and ma.it's always a pleasure to go out with her.Time when you can talk utter crap ranging from religion to philosophy to life to teachers to almost anything and getting in return some seriously experienced fundaes from a best friend i call "mom".And the absence of two males who raise eyebrows on any girly talk was a much needed change.
This is what happens when you have the right company but choose the wrong movie. The movie was three hours. But they say a movie is as long as it feels and by the time we were out mom had aged 200years and me a 100.I would have aged only 50 but for my mom's constant cribbing throught out the three longest hours of my life.

Having said this i would just like to thank the makers of these movies for having made such debacles. It relatively helps us appreciate the other really good ones.right?

Relativity.I hate relativity. Why should everything be relative?
Time,Space, grades, performance, adjectives and just about everything. Why can't somebody be good and that's it! Why should someone be better, best or badder(?) or worse??
It never works right for me.But it works for the world. The damn relative world!!
The RACE from RELATIVITY continues.
SIGH.
